Microsoft Genuine Advantage Has Gone AWOL

Windows errorArs Technica is reporting that Microsoft Genuine Advantage Validation Tool is experiencing worldwide outages and is invalidating installations all over the map. This has some serious consequences for Microsoft if it isn’t fixed soon: every piece of Microsoft software that you install on a Windows-PC has to be validated which means that anyone buying Microsoft products this weekend will have to wait until the problem is fixed to do anything. If you try and install a program, there is the possibility that WGA will invalidate your copy of Windows, causing a major headache if you restart your computer. Ars Technica is saying that it may be Tuesday before the service is back online…I certainly would not want to be the Project Manager for WGA this weekend! Updates to follow as they become available.

UPDATE 8/25/07 (6:30 pm CST): Microsoft has identified the problem as stemming from the WGA servers being out and said the workaround method is simply using the online validation site. See the Microsoft statement on their forums.

Also, Project Manager Phil Liu’s forum post on the issue.
